Experience harvest and traditional field work at the Hjerl Hede Open-Air Museum near Vinderup in Central Jutland on Sunday 13 September 2026 from 10:00 to 16:00. Throughout the day, the historic museum landscape comes alive as the year's harvest is brought in and the fields are prepared for next year's crops.

On the fields, you can see how grain was once threshed using a traditional threshing machine powered by a vintage tractor. Horses also return to the fields as they plough and harrow the soil before rye and wheat are sown. It is living history that gives you a close-up experience of traditional farming methods from before modern agricultural machinery became part of everyday life.

The whole family can join in the potato harvest. Help dig up potatoes and take home a small bag as a souvenir from the day's harvest.

From apples to juice and vegetables from the gardens
At Hjerl Hede's traditional garden stall, you can see how apples are turned into fresh apple juice and learn more about different apple varieties and traditional ways of growing and using apples.

If you have apples from your own garden, you are welcome to bring them along and have them pressed on site. Museum volunteers will help you and share their knowledge of traditional apple growing and juice making.

You can also find vegetables from Hjerl Hede's historic gardens and surplus seeds from the museum's plants. Get inspiration for your own garden and learn how people traditionally grew vegetables and saved seeds for the following year's crops. Vegetables and seeds are available while stocks last.

Take a historic horse-drawn carriage ride
On 13 September, you can also enjoy a scenic horse-drawn carriage ride through the historic landscape of Hjerl Hede. Along the way, the driver will tell you about historic food, farming and agriculture, and how people used to grow crops and produce food.

A carriage ride costs DKK 40 per person. Children aged 0–2 ride free.
