Meet ceramicist Inger Bruhn at ART56°

In June, ceramicist Inger Bruhn takes up residence at ART56°, bringing a lifelong love of clay and a deep devotion to the raku firing technique – where fire, sawdust and open air all have a say in the final result. Open studio Saturday to Wednesday – come and see what emerges from the embers.

Inger Bruhn (b. 1948, Aarhus) studied at the Aarhus Academy of Fine Arts and has spent her working life in close conversation with clay. She's best known for her raku work – a Japanese-inspired firing technique that is as unpredictable as it is compelling.

The process goes like this: once the ceramics are glowing red-hot at around 1000°C, they're lifted straight from the kiln with tongs and placed into a container of sawdust. Deprived of oxygen, the process smoulders on before a sudden plunge into cold water brings it to a halt – and then the pieces are left outside, where wind and weather add the finishing touches. The dramatic temperature shifts create the raku's signature crackled surface, while the charred sawdust leaves its own dark, distinctive mark.

Alongside raku, Inger works on the wheel and with slab building, producing everything from functional lidded jars to sculptural objects and themed installations. Her tall, slender bottle-forms have an almost conversational quality – stand a few of them together and they seem to lean in towards each other. Come and see for yourself.
