Poppinga, who originally hails from Munich, has found his own path from wood sculpture to ceramics and glass over the years. His fascination with the sea and coast permeates every single work, and through his unique techniques he manages to capture the facets of the ocean in clay and glaze.

— The material clay and its diverse possibilities in ceramic firing give me the necessary freedom for a wide variety of approaches. I develop my own techniques in modelling, mould-making, firing and glazing. Depending on what I find right, it gets changed or tried anew in the process, Björn Poppinga explains.

It's especially the glaze with its colour intensity that plays a central role in his work. Under his hands, intoxicating, luminously coloured unique pieces emerge, and it feels almost as if you could take a piece of the sea home with you. He moves freely between different techniques and materials – apparently without limits – and creates maritime artworks that reflect his nuanced work with form and colour.

Björn Poppinga, who is based between the two seas in Schleswig-Holstein, finds inspiration in nature's forms, materials and colours. His ceramic objects and glass art speak their own language and capture the vitality and beauty of the sea in a way that both fascinates and moves.

During the two weeks in Hvide Sande, visitors can drop by the studio, see the exhibited works and learn more about the artist's working process – completely informal and free of charge.
