You notice it as soon as you arrive in the small villages around Varde. East of the town, the villages have what small towns often master to perfection: a strong sense of community. The people who live here are passionate about their town's meeting places, the safe village life, and the surrounding nature.
The small village of Agerbæk may not be large in terms of population, but the experiences and memories you can take home with you are too big to fit in your suitcase. A place in town with a good and pleasant atmosphere is the Agerbæk Library. Here you can settle down with a good book and let the children play in the blue playroom, ‘Dybet’.
Need some fresh air and nature? Then Agerbæk shelter is the place for you. There are even MTB and hiking trails, so there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature at a leisurely pace or go full throttle on the MTB trails. When darkness falls, you can spend the night in the two fully equipped shelters, each with room for six people. You don't need to book accommodation here, but instead hope that no one has beaten you to it.
Stop by Baldersbæk, where you can see the castle, make “Den Lumske Dreng” (the sneaky boy) pee by stepping on the step, and take walks along the pleasant landscaped paths. The area was built in the 1900s by wholesaler Holger Petersen. He invested both money and energy in the area and had Villa Baldersbæk, also known as ‘The Castle’, built. Visitors can get close to the villa, which is still used as a residence and is therefore not open to the public.
From Agerbæk, head slightly northeast to the town of Starup-Tofterup. Here, there are nature experiences for everyone, and you will quickly sense the locals' passion for all the greenery around them. In the middle of a green oasis and still close to shopping, culture, and experiences, Starup-Tofterup is a warm and wonderful place to visit. The Nature University at Starup is located in a scenic area connected to the Coast to Coast Trail. There are four local and historic hiking trails, the shortest of which is 5.7 km. The shelter area is cozy and offers toilet facilities, a campfire site, and space to pitch your own tent if you need it. The site cannot be booked.
The town of Årre, with its 600 inhabitants, has existed since the year 800. Årre Church dates back to 1618 and stands proudly in the town center. Grab a basket and fill it with delicious seasonal fruits in Larsens Skov. The labyrinthine paths are perfect for playing hide and seek and getting lost in the woods. The 4,000 m2 forest is a wonderful nature experience. Helle Hallen is a big part of local life in Årre – it is where the town's residents, guests, and visitors gather for fun and games. Here you can swim, play games, and try your hand at both outdoor and indoor shooting ranges. From Helle Hallen, head south and you will come to the small town of Fåborg. With its 309 inhabitants, it is a little gem in the southwestern Jutland landscape. Fåborg Church stands proudly in the town center, and the town is beautifully surrounded by the stunning natural landscape.
