What makes an accommodation eco-friendly?

When we talk about eco-friendly accommodation by the North Sea, we're referring to more than just the green colour in their logos or marketing. These places have incorporated sustainability into their core, which is reflected in several aspects of their operations and facilities.

Energy efficiency

A fundamental element of eco-friendly accommodation is energy efficiency. This includes the use of renewable energy sources such as solar panels or wind energy, as well as energy-saving measures such as LED lighting, efficient heating and cooling systems and well-insulated buildings.

Sustainable materials and resource management

These spaces often utilise sustainable materials in their construction and interior design. This can involve recycled or recyclable materials and natural products that are less harmful to the environment. There is also an emphasis on responsible management of resources, including water conservation and the use of environmentally friendly cleaning products.

Waste management and recycling

Efficient waste management and recycling is another important factor. Many eco-friendly venues have systems in place for composting, recycling and reducing plastic use, minimising their environmental impact.

Organic dining experiences

Many of these properties also offer organic dining experiences where food is made from local, organic and seasonal ingredients, supporting the local community and reducing the footprint.

Supporting the local community

An eco-friendly approach also includes a commitment to supporting the local community. This can include collaborating with local businesses, promoting local crafts and culture, and participating in conservation initiatives.

As a traveller, your choice of eco-friendly accommodation not only contributes to your own green travel experience, but also to promoting sustainable practices that have a long-lasting positive effect on the environment and the local North Sea community.

Selected eco-friendly accommodation by the North Sea

The North Sea offers a range of eco-friendly accommodation options, each offering a unique and sustainable stay experience. Here are some standout examples that demonstrate how comfort, luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand.

Hotel Skjern

Hotel Skjern is committed to being a pioneer in sustainable tourism. Located in the heart of the beautiful nature of Skjern, the hotel recognises its role in protecting and preserving the environment and the local community. Through a number of initiatives and actions, Hotel Skjern strives to minimise its environmental impact and maximise its positive contribution to the local community.

Hotel Skjern is also dedicated to minimising its waste and promoting recycling. Through careful waste sorting and collaboration with local recycling facilities, the hotel seeks to minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill. In addition, the hotel has introduced recyclable and biodegradable materials into its operational processes and encourages guests to participate in reuse and recycling initiatives.

Fjordgaarden is conscious of their impact on the world around us and therefore wants to take responsibility for our common future by creating sustainable mindsets in the way they operate. This is why sustainability is one of Fjordgaarden's fundamental values.

Fjordgaarden in Ringkøbing is the reason why sustainable initiatives are really taking off in the local community. In an excellent example of their commitment to the environment, they have implemented solar panels as part of their energy supply strategy. This decision shows their commitment to reducing their environmental footprint and creating a more sustainable future. But Fjordgaarden's commitment to sustainability doesn't stop at solar panels. They have also implemented other eco-friendly practices such as recycling, waste sorting and energy efficiency to minimise their environmental impact on all levels.

Hvidbjerg Strand Holiday Park

At Hvidbjerg Strand, they take care of nature so that you and our other guests can relax and enjoy life with a clear conscience - now and in the future. They use nature's own materials when building cabins and buildings in the holiday park. As well as adding soul to the site, the buildings fit in with nature, which looks forward to your visit.

In the ground beneath the campsite, 6 kilometres of hoses are buried for a geothermal heating system, which is one of the largest of its kind in Denmark. Large solar heating systems have been installed on the roofs of the buildings, utilising every ray of sunlight all year round. It is from these installations that the energy for all the hot water that you can enjoy in Hvidbjerg Strand's wellness centre and waterpark comes from. So dive with a clear conscience, it's almost CO2 neutral. You only have to come into contact with cold water if you want to.

Arnbjerg Pavilion

Arnbjerg Pavillonen in Varde has committed to implementing a number of sustainability initiatives to reduce their environmental footprint and promote more responsible business practices. Restaurant GRO, part of Arnbjerg Pavillonen, prioritises the use of local and organic food in their menus to support local farmers and reduce CO2 emissions associated with food transportation. This also allows guests to enjoy fresh, seasonal ingredients.
They also offer electric car charging facilities for guests who choose this more sustainable mode of transport.

Green camping and bed and breakfast accommodation

The many campsites and bed and breakfasts in the destination are also working hard to succeed with various sustainability initiatives. They are aware that one of their core products - besides accommodation - is nature. That's why they want to protect it.

These North Sea accommodations are more than just places to sleep; they are ambassadors for a sustainable lifestyle and offer guests a chance to actively participate in environmental conservation while enjoying everything the region has to offer.

Experiences at green accommodations by the North Sea

Choosing eco-friendly accommodation by the North Sea is not just about finding a place to sleep. It's an invitation to dive into a world of sustainable experiences and activities that enrich your holiday and your connection to nature.

Nature and eco-conscious activities

Many of the eco-friendly accommodations in the North Sea offer activities that highlight the natural beauty of the region and promote a deeper understanding and respect for the environment. This can include guided hikes, bird watching, stargazing evenings and sustainable living workshops. One example is a collaboration between holiday home agency Esmark and OMHU: in Hvide Sande, which organises beach cleaning.

Organic restaurants and cafés

A number of eco-friendly accommodations offer dining options that serve dishes made from local, organic ingredients. These restaurants and cafés focus on the 'farm to table' principle, ensuring freshness and supporting local producers. Eating at these places is not only a culinary delight, but also part of a sustainable lifestyle.

Wellness and relaxation

Sustainability is also about personal wellbeing. Some eco-friendly accommodations offer wellness facilities such as spa treatments with organic products, yoga classes in nature, or meditation by the beach. These activities promote both personal health and sustainable practices.

Sustainable interior and architecture

Finally, the design and decoration of these places is often an experience in itself. Many use sustainable building materials, recycled décor and natural elements that create an atmosphere of calm and connect guests with nature.

How to find and book eco-friendly accommodation

Finding and booking eco-friendly accommodation by the North Sea can be an easy and rewarding part of your travel planning. With a growing number of options available, here are some tips on how to identify and secure a sustainable accommodation option that suits your needs.

Use specialised booking platforms

There are several online platforms and travel websites that specialise in eco-friendly accommodation. These sites make it easy to filter and search for places that fulfil specific sustainability criteria. Some of these platforms include detailed descriptions of the accommodation's sustainable practices, which can help you make an informed choice.

Read reviews and feedback

Reviews from previous guests can provide valuable insight into whether a property lives up to its eco-friendly claims. Read guest reviews on various travel websites to get a sense of their experiences and the property's sustainable practices.

Research the property's sustainability initiatives

Visit the property's own website or contact them directly to get more detailed information about their sustainability initiatives. Many properties are proud of their commitment to the environment and are happy to share information about their energy sources, waste management, use of organic products and more.

Pay attention to certifications

Look for environmental certifications or labels that may indicate a property's commitment to sustainability. Certifications from recognised organisations such as Green Key or the EU Ecolabel are good indicators of an accommodation's sustainable practices.

Consider location and transport options

Choose accommodation that is easily accessible by public transport or close to the areas you plan to visit. This can help reduce your dependence on car transport and therefore your "carbon footprint".
