Tarm goes back to the 14th century, but the current town was founded around 1850. In 1875 the railroad came to town and that started a major development. Tarm has a long history in trade. This continues with the summer markets, which attract lots of shopkeepers and traders.

Art and Culture in Tarm

Art plays a central role in Tarm, where several sculptures adorn the town – each with its own unique story. One of the most striking is Genius by Peter Heinze, located in the roundabout north of town on Åboulevarden. The sculpture depicts seven owls in a tree, symbolising the seven parishes merged during a municipal reform. Another notable sculpture is Den Dykkende Dame (The diving lady), whose elegant form and motion evoke a sense of lightness and weightlessness in water.
Tvillingemasken (The Twin Mask) shows two faces fused together – perhaps an interpretation of human relationships and unity.
Mor & Barn (Mother and Child) is a beautiful and touching sculpture honouring the bond and love of motherhood.
Teatermasken (The Theater Mask) refers to the roots of performing arts and the many faces we, as humans, may wear.
A more whimsical sculpture is Englekvinde ridder på havmandens ryg (Female Angel Riding the Back of a Merman), blending the mythical with the dreamlike – a strong symbol of balance and harmony between the earthly and the supernatural.
Søjle (Pillar) is a commemorative monument from 1939, erected by former pupils on the occasion of the school’s 50th anniversary in 1937. It consists of 50 stones – one for each year – designed by architect V. Strunge of Copenhagen. The school is to preserve and maintain it for as long as it exists.
