Skallingen and Langli - the most northern island in the Wadden Sea

Svanesøen in Ølgod
Nesting mute swans have given Svanesøen [Swan Lake] its name. The swan is Denmark’s heaviest bird, the males can weigh as much as 16 kg and have a wingspan of more than 2 metres.

Ulvedalen at the plantation Bjørslev
Only few places in West Jutland offer you the view of a gorge like Ulvedalen in the plantation Bjørslev Plantage. Just a few steps from the parking area, you can enjoy the grand view over landscape formations, which ice and melted water created about 130,000 years ago.

Houvig Fæstningen
3.8 km north of Søndervig is one of the most important German fortifications in Denmark from the 2nd World War. It consists of 50 bunkers and approx. 50 other concrete installations which were used as part of the German Atlantic Wall with cannons, anti-aircraft – and machine gun bunkers etc.

Grærup Langsø
Red deer is Denmark’s largest land mammal. You need both luck and complete silence to find red deer on your own. However, there are certain places with large numbers of red deer all year round.

Hindø
Hindø is a 70 hectares big and listed island in Stadil Fjord north of Ringkøbing. You can park at the bridge to the island and walk the marked trail around the island.

The coast from Nymindegab to Blåvands Huk - 'Atlantvolden'
On this coastal stretch, you can see some of the most impressive dune landscapes in Denmark. Behind the wide and beautiful beach are large rows of dunes, stretching far into the landscape.

Ringkøbing Fjord
At approximately 300 square metres, Ringkøbing Fjord is the largest lake in West Jutland. Locals here think it is also the most beautiful..... The fjord is a shallow lake of brackish water surrounded by tidal meadows, particularly at the Tippen and Værn areas.

Skjern Å
Skjern Å is the pride of Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality. In this beautiful nature area, you can take a long walk, catch a large salmon, or take a trip in a canoe.

Skjern Enge
The meadows Skjern Enge are located between Skjern and Tarm on the road from Borris to Ringkøbing Fjord. It is a 2,200 hectares large nature area dominated by meadows, wetlands and lakes as well as the rivers Skjern Å, Omme Å and Gundesbøl Å.

The Rope-Pulled Ferries in Skjern Enge
Skjern Enge is a fantastic area which offers many wonderful experiences for the public; also for those in wheelchairs. Here, there are rope-pulled ferries, suspension bridges, and bird watching towers that allow you to observe this area's many species of birds.

Blåbjerg Plantation
Blaabjerg plantation has a very exciting nature. There is dunes, coast, "mountains", moor, oak scrubs and plantation. You may also be lucky enough to see some of the deer that also live in the plantation.

Borris Hede
The heath area Borris Hede is 4,720 hectares big, making it Denmark’s biggest heath area with a diverse plant and animal life. The grounds are used by the Danish Armed Forces for target practice.

Varde Å

Karlsgårde Lake
Karlsgårde Lake is located close to Sig east of Varde. The 80-ha lake is one of the largest in the area. The lake is artificial and not very deep. It was established in connection with Karlsgårde Værket, Denmark's second largest hydro-electric power station, which is listed today.

Værnengene
Værnengene is the southern part of the Tipperne peninsula in the southern part of Ringkøbing Fjord. The nature is under conservation and the area is all year round a true paradise for birds.

The area by Nørholm
The river Varde Å runs through the manor Nørholm Gods, which includes several listed landscape types such as inland dunes, heaths, meadows, moors and pastures.

Bagges Dæmning
For 150 years, the remains of Bagges Dæmning have reminded us of the failed drainage project in the north end of Ringkøbing Fjord, before Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality in 2016 established two bridges along with a bike and hiking trail.

Hanssinelund
A fine path system guides you through the charming poet’s grove in Ølgod Byskov. At the beginning of the 20th Century, the Nielsen couple established a privately park with memorials of great Danish poets, which is now called Hanssinelund.

Lønborg Heath

The path around Ølgod
In Ølgod, a lovely route of 9 kilometres has been built around the city. The path is in good condition and most of it is paved with asphalt, the rest with gravel and stone dust. Whether you want to run or walk, cycle or stroll with the pram, the path around Ølgod town is the perfect place for it.

The History Path winds about 6 km around Ølgod Byskov. Along the way, there are 13 stops that tell about the forest’s creation, flora and fauna, burial mounds, the people who created the area and about local stories and activities.

Water Gardens & the Green Corridor in Skjern
Visit the Water Gardens for an extraordinary experience. The Water Gardens are part of The Green Corridor, which clings along the Kirkeå through Skjern. In the corridor, you can follow a trail system that will reveal the area’s history, nature and activity options.

Kvie Lake
The lake Kvie Sø, situated a bit north of Ansager, is listed and about 30 hectares big. The lake is low on nutrients, meaning that rare plants like spring quillwort grow in the clear water of the lake.

Horne Vikingelund
Vikingelunden is surrounded by fantastic nature with both forest and lake. At the heart of the forest is a large clearing with a lovely grille hut with tables and benches for 30 people.

Ansager Lake park
'Wild at Will' is the theme for large parts of the area, where grass and flowers are allowed to grow freely.

Ansager Stream
The Ansager River winds through its beautiful natural surroundings of meadows and scrub. In and by the river there is a wealth of wildlife: white-throated dippers and kingfishers are frequent winter guests, grey ducks and herrons can be seen year-round.

Vrøgum Kær
Vrøgum Kær is a nature area that consists of willow swamp and willow scrub in mosaic with transitional poor marsh and the very rare habitat type for the West Jutland, extreme rich marsh. The pond has previously been extensively grazed, but has been overgrown for a number of years.

Guldsmedesøen in Ølgod
Guldsmedesøen [Dragonfly Lake] got his name in 2018 – when a rare dragonfly - the green mosaic - was observed there.

Larsen's Forest
There are fruit trees and berry bushes, and you can pick for your own consumption; In this respect and others, Larsen’s forest stands out from the crowd. The 4,000-square-metre forest has a wealth of hiding places that invite play and 'getting lost' because of its labyrinth-like path system.

Nysø close to Varde is a great place to experience nature, for instance by taking a swim in the lake, a hike on the hiking path or by spending a night on the basic campsite.

Pølmose & Lillesø
Pølmose is a peat bog and until the 1960s peat was dug in the marsh. The marsh now has an undisturbed plant and animal life, and a 2.5 km nature path has been laid around the marsh, offering a fantastic walk.

Brinkerne
Wonderful scenic area with lake and paths. On the site there are tables and benches where you can enjoy the view. There is also a small packed lunch house where you can grill or make a fire.
